The Nature of Truth and the Origin of the Lie
A Study of John 8:44
John 8:44 (KJV)
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.
He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Introduction
In one of His most solemn and penetrating statements, Jesus exposes the spiritual nature of sin and falsehood. In
John 8:44, He identifies Satan as
the father of lies and contrasts
the truth with
the lie. To understand this passage, we must look beyond mere deception and see the cosmic conflict between God’s truth - His eternal nature and Word - and Satan’s rebellion, which gave birth to all falsehood.
This study explores what
the truth and
the lie represent, and how they reveal the fundamental moral and spiritual divide in creation.
The Truth: The Nature and Reality of God
In the Gospel of John, truth is not limited to factual accuracy or moral sincerity. It represents the very essence of God’s being - His righteousness, holiness, and faithfulness - and is fully revealed in the person of Jesus Christ.
John 14:6 - I am the way, the truth, and the life.
John 17:17 - Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Truth, therefore, is not merely something God speaks, but something He is. Every word and act of God flows from His perfect nature. To
abide in the truth is to live in harmony with God’s will and to acknowledge His authority. To reject the truth is to reject God Himself.
When Jesus says Satan
abode not in the truth, it implies that Satan was once in harmony with God’s order but willfully departed from it, choosing pride and self-exaltation over obedience. As a result, he no longer dwells in light but in deception. The truth is the reality of God’s righteousness and sovereignty, from which Satan separated himself eternally.
The Lie: Rebellion and the Illusion of Self-Rule
If truth is the nature of God, the lie is the false claim that one can live apart from Him. It began in Eden, when the serpent said to Eve:
Genesis 3:4-5 - Ye shall not surely die... ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
This is the archetypal lie - the denial of God’s word (
ye shall not surely die) and the exaltation of self (
ye shall be as gods). Through this lie, death entered the world (Romans 5:12), and all humanity inherited the deception that we can determine right and wrong apart from God’s truth.
Every false religion, corrupt philosophy, and moral distortion in human history traces its roots back to that first denial.
Paul identifies it clearly:
Romans 1:25 - Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator.
Thus, the lie is not simply a false statement - it is the spiritual condition of rebellion. It is the belief that creation can exist independently of its Creator, that man can define morality, truth, and destiny without reference to God.
The Context of John 8:44
Jesus' words in
John 8 are directed at religious leaders who claimed spiritual descent from Abraham, yet rejected Christ - the very embodiment of truth.
By rejecting Him, they demonstrated the same spirit that characterized Satan:
Pride in self-righteousness,
Resistance to divine authority,
And refusal to acknowledge God’s revelation in His Son.
Their outward religiosity masked an inward rebellion. Though they professed to serve God, their hearts aligned with the adversary. Jesus’ statement,
Ye are of your father the devil, therefore exposes not physical lineage but spiritual likeness - they bore the moral resemblance of the one they imitated.
The Eternal Contrast: Truth vs. Lie
This verse reveals two distinct spiritual lineages that define all humanity:
Spiritual Reality | Defined By | Example | Outcome |
---|
The Truth | The nature and Word of God, embodied in Christ | John 1:14, John 14:6 | Life, righteousness, and communion with God |
The Lie | Self-rule, denial of God’s authority, deception of sin | Genesis 3:4-5, Romans 1:25 | Death, separation, and rebellion against God |
To live in the truth is to live in Christ - in humble submission to the Word and will of God.
To live in the lie is to follow the path of pride, asserting independence from God, and thus aligning oneself with Satan’s rebellion.
The Spiritual Implication
John 8:44 is not merely a historical accusation but a timeless warning.
Every heart belongs either to the God of Truth or to the father of lies.
The battle is not external but spiritual - between the acceptance of divine truth and the seduction of self-deception.
When Jesus said,
Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (
John 8:32), He revealed that deliverance from sin and falsehood comes only through Him.
Freedom is found not in autonomy but in obedience to the truth.
Conclusion
In the final analysis,
the truth in
John 8:44 represents God’s eternal nature and Word - the divine order of righteousness embodied in Christ.
The lie represents Satan’s rebellion - the delusion that one can exist, rule, or define morality apart from God.
From Eden to the present, this same conflict endures. Each human soul must decide where to stand:
With the God of Truth, whose Word gives life,
Or with the father of lies, whose deception leads to death.
As believers, we are called not only to know the truth but to abide in it - living testimonies of the One who said,
For this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. (
John 18:37)
